This study examined the longitudinal continuity between vocabulary ability at age 3 and vocabulary ability in the first grade of elementary school, and investigate whether electronic media use at age 5 additionally predicts first-grade vocabulary after controlling for vocabulary at age 3 and parental socioeconomic background. Data were drawn from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), including the 4th wave (2011), 6th wave (2013), and 8th wave (2015). The final sample consisted of 1,324 children with complete data on receptive and expressive vocabulary at age 3 (Wave 4), electronic media use for educational and entertainment purposes at age 5 (Wave 6), and receptive and expressive vocabulary in the first grade of elementary school (Wave 8). Pearson correlation analyses and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted. The results indicated that receptive and expressive vocabulary at age 3 significantly and positively predicted corresponding vocabulary domains in the first grade. After controlling for age-3 vocabulary and parental socioeconomic background, entertainment-oriented electronic media use at age 5 showed a small but statistically significant negative association with expressive vocabulary in the first grade. In contrast, educational electronic media use was not significantly associated with either receptive or expressive vocabulary in the first grade. These findings reaffirm the foundational role of early vocabulary development and suggest that the effect of electronic media use on later language outcomes may differ depending on the purpose of use. The study highlights the importance of supporting early language development and calls for educational and policy guidelines that consider not only the amount of media use but also its purpose and context.
