Invasive species are major drivers of biodiversity loss, yet their effects on metacommunity-scale diversity remain unclear. This study examined how largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) affect the taxonomic and functional diversity of fish assemblages in lentic ecosystems across South Korea. Fish community and environmental data were compiled from 87 reservoirs surveyed between 2010 and 2023.
Taxonomic (α, β, γ) and functional diversity indices were estimated using Whittaker’s framework, Sørensen dissimilarity, and multidimensional trait space via the mFD package. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and linear mixed-effect models (LMM) revealed that the relative abundance of largemouth bass (LMB mean RA) had significant negative effects on α- and γ-diversity (p < 0.001), while β-diversity (β Sørensen) increased with bass abundance (p < 0.01). This increase was driven by species turnover rather than nestedness, indicating short-term heterogenization rather than homogenization. Similarly, functional β-diversity rose with bass abundance (p < 0.001), whereas functional richness (FRic) declined with higher bass abundance and chlorophyll-a (p < 0.001).
Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis revealed that maximum body size, substrate preference, habitat type, and feeding habit were the primary functional traits associated with species’ vulnerability to largemouth bass invasion. Species ≥ 9 cm exhibited elevated susceptibility when characterized by general, open-water, or vegetation-associated substrate use or by carnivorous feeding habits. In contrast, species < 9 cm were differentiated largely by habitat type, with lentic small-bodied fishes showing pronounced negative responses, whereas generalist small species exhibited neutral or positive responses.
Overall, invasive predators reduce local and regional diversity while restructuring community composition, underscoring the need for trait-based approaches in managing biotic invasions in lentic ecosystems.
