This thesis interrogates the spatial metaphors underpinning Michel Foucault’s The Order of Things (Les Mots et les Choses) to delineate the topography of the ‘epistemological space’ presupposed as the transcendental condition of knowledge. The study posits that Foucault’s recourse to metaphorical figuration is not merely stylistic but a methodological device intended to disclose the ‘field’(champ) of cognitive possibility, circumventing the formalization of a dogmatic epistemology.
While prior scholarship on the épistémè of The Order of Things has largely prioritized the archaeological themes of discontinuity and rupture, the constitutive role of spatial imagery remains underexplored. Through an analysis of dispersed figures—specifically ‘China,’ the ‘table,’ and the ‘grid’—this research instantiates Foucault’s abstract spatiality. Starting with the heterotopology of Borges’s ‘Chinese encyclopedia,’ which marks the exteriority of order, the analysis contrasts this with the ‘table’ and ‘grid’ as instruments of classificatory visibility. The thesis further examines the transition from the Renaissance metaphor of the world-as-book (organized by resemblance) to the Classical encyclopedia (governed by representation and tabular distribution), arguing that each épistémè is grounded in a specific spatial configuration.
Ultimately, it is argued that these metaphors function as epistemic operators rather than rhetorical ornaments; they render the latent structures of knowledge perceptible, thus grounding Foucault’s archaeological project and opening new avenues for inquiring into the spatial foundations of historical epistemology.
