□ The Moon Jae-in Administration has adopted “Transition to Safe and Clean Energy” as the goal of its energy policy and is pursuing nuclear phase-out and the proliferation of renewable energy as its core policy tasks.
○ In the Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan, announced in 2017, the government unveiled its plan to increase the share of renewable energy to 20% of the nation’s total power generation by 2030.
□ Another recent change in the energy market is rising demands for electric vehicle batteries, propelled by technological advancements and a policy promoting the increased proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs).
○ The Korean government has established a policy that aims to increase EV proliferation in Korea to 430,000 vehicles by 2022.
○ Countries like the Netherlands, Germany, and India have announced plans to remove gasoline and diesel cars from the market by 2030; the United Kingdom and France aims to remove such vehicles by 2040. Some institutions forecast that by 2040, pure EVs (those relying solely on batteries) will account for around 50% of all new vehicle sales worldwide.
