Many historians emphasize that World War Ⅱ accelerated the economic growth, urbanization, and modernization in Texas. But this article shows in this situation one of the trigger for the rise of American conservatism. Postwar industrial and urban growth in Texas made some social problems such as racial conflict and labor strikes, and it effected a change that many Texans wanted to have rest or to reside in suburbs. These social and cultural needs transformed Texas into the western space. And this spatial change caused Texans to arouse the western nostalgia and memory. Most of all, Texas conservatives used this collective memory not only to strength their western image but also to resist postwar New Deal liberalism and welfare state. Therefore westernization of Texas provided an essential impetus of the ascendancy of modern American conservatism.
