미술관 회의론을 극복하기 위한 단초로서의 존 듀이의 ‘경험으로서의 예술’ = John Dewey's ‘Art as Experience’ as a Theoretical Foundation, to Overcome Skepticism about Art Museums

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 단편적이지만 꾸준히 제기되어온 미술관에 대한 다각도 회의론의 비판들을, 크게 두 가지 논점, 즉 19세기로부터 제기되어 온 ‘맥락 제거에 대한 비판’과, 1990년대 이후 등장한 ‘정치 이데올로기적인 공간이라는 비판’으로 나누어 살펴보고, 이를 극복하기 위한 이론적 단초로서 존 듀이의 예술론을 검토해 보았다. 특히 본 논문은 듀이의 예술론에 있어서, 삶과 예술의 연속성 회복, 인간과 환경 사이의 상호작용으로서의 예술, 그리고 작품의 의미와 가치의 변화 가능성에 대한 논의를 통하여 회의론을 넘어서고자 하였다.
필자는 듀이의 주장과 같이, 예술이 삶과의 연속성을 회복할 수 있다면, 예술 역시 그것의 맥락성을 되찾을 수 있으며, 이를 통해 회의론의 ‘맥락 제거에 대한 비판’은 극복될 수 있음을 논하였다. 그리고 듀이의 이론에 따라 삶과 예술이 다시 통합될 수 있다면, 예술은 권력과 자본의 이데올로기적인 통제에서 벗어날 수 있고, 미술관도 정치와 자본에 의해 통제되는 공간이라는 1990년대 회의론의 비판을 극복할 수 있다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 예술의 본질을 경험으로 여기는 듀이의 예술론이 작품의 의미와 가치의 변화 가능성을 열어 두고 있다는 점을 살펴봄으로써, 미술사적 배치가 작품 해석에 있어서 미술관의 교조적 권력으로 작용하고 관람자를 이데올로기적으로 구성한다고 주장하는 현대 회의론을 극복하고자 하였다.
본 논문은 미술관에 관한 논의에 있어서 듀이의 예술론의 중요성을 밝힐 수 있었다. 듀이는 미술관에 대한 회의론의 입장을 취하면서도 자신의 이론 내에 그것을 극복할 수 있는 단초를 심어둠으로써 오히려 미술관이 근대적인 전형에서 벗어나 새로운 길을 모색할 수 있는 계기를 마련해주었다. 초기로부터 현대에 이르기까지 미술관 회의론의 주요 논점들을 포괄하는 듀이의 미술관에 대한 비판과 경고는 오히려 미술관이 새로운 모습으로 변모하도록 만드는 원동력이 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper criticized skepticism about the art museum which has been presented in a piecemeal but steadily, two direction: criticism about the removal of the context which has been raised from the nineteenth century and criticism art museum as political ideological space. In particular, this paper sought to overcome skepticism on the basis of Dewey's art theory by discussing the restoration of continuity between life and art, the art as an transaction between man and environment, and the possibility of change in meaning and value of work.
I would argue that if art restored continuity with life, as Dewey argues, then art could regain its context and that skepticism's critique of the removal of the context could be overcome. If life and art were reintegrated according to Dewey's theory, art could overcome criticism of the' 1990s skepticism that museum was a space controlled by politics and capital ideologically.
Finally, this paper examined that Dewey's art theory, which considers the essence of art as an experience, opened up the possibility of changing the meaning and value of the work. As a result, this paper tried to overcome the arguments of 1990s skepticism that art historical arrangement of work in the museum serves as the doctrinal power in interpreting the work.
