This study is to investigate Feng Shui Characteristics by analyzing places of national Universities in Honam Province, and then it is to deduce similarities and differences. When Seowon (Confucian Academy) and Hyanggyo (Local School), which are educational academies in the Joseon Dynasty, were being placed, Feng Shui was a very important criteria. Today, in the process of selecting sites of a university, Feng Shui principles are still significant. Therefore, the Feng Shui characteristics of placing a university resemble the academic institutions in the Joseon Dynasty. These are those premises. First, Jusan and Ansan were selected mainly focusing on Samgilsung and water was chosen mainly focusing on Samgilsoo. Second, Hyul is suited to the principles of Yang Gyun-Song. Third, significant buildings such as a Ganghak place (lecture hall) and Jehyang place (ancestral shrine) were constructed in an excellent pungsoogeographic spot called Hyul Cheo. Fourth, preferences of the building’s directions were selected depending not on Lichi principles but on environments by considering topography and geographical features. Fifth, as a Bibo against Sal(殺), Seowon, Hyanggyo, and Colleges set water and trees mainly considered as the Bibo. According to the phenomena, it can be inferred that Feng Shui principles have existed since now.
As a result of comparing and analyzing research data, there are similarities as follows. First, Hyul is selected based on the logical principles of Yang Gyun-Song. Second, in both cases of Ansan and Water, Gil Gyeok is preferred, which is related to wealth. Third, the prior school ground was reused. Fourth, every significant building was constructed on the excellent Pungsoogeographic spot called Hyul Cheo. their sites were selected in accordance with Yangtaekji. Sixth, sculpture and Bibomul were installed by considering Theory of Form of Things Image and principles of Bibo.
As a result of comparing and analyzing research data, there are differences as follows. First, only Jeonbuk National University constructed a library on the excellent Pungsoogeographic spot called Hyul Cheo, considering Ganghak place significant. Second, in Chonnam National University, many places and sculptures were given names related to Feng Shui. Third, Kunsan National University selected Pyeongjeonsoo, which is different from the other universities. Fourth, Suncheon National University selected Nokjonchae as the Jusan instead of choosing Samgilsung. Fifth, Mokpo National University was relocated into Muan, where Hoseungyegbulhyeong, from Mokpo. Sixth, there is a different purpose of water usage between protection for Hyul and Bibo. Seventh, building directions were set by theories of Hyeongse, which compromises tomography and geographical features rather than by artificial geometric methods.
In conclusion, with similarities and differences, the nation, which is the main institution of the university establishment, actively applied principles of Feng Shui and selected university sites. The college sites in Honam province are placed in Gilji by utilizing Feng Shui Characteristics. It can be verified in the reuse of the sites of educational institutions of Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, Feng Shui is being utilized as a significant criteria when selecting sites of a university, which is a center of academic exploration.
