This study set out to investigate correlations between children's self-control & Big Five Personality Factors and subjective well-being and the effects of children's self-control and Big Five Personality Factors on subject well-being.
For that purpose, the investigator administered the Self-control Scale, Big Five Personality Factors Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Scale to measure subjective well-being, and Satisfaction with Life Scale. A survey was taken with 353 boys and girls in the fifth grade in Daejeon.
The research findings were as follows:
First, self-control had significant positive relations with positive emotions and satisfaction with life of subjective well-being and negative relations with negative emotions.
Second, all the subfactors of the Big Five Personality Factors had significant correlations with subjective well-being. Conscientiousness, openness to experience, extraversion, and agreeable were in close positive correlations with positive emotions and satisfaction with life, while neuroticism predicted negative emotions.
Third, both self-control and Big Five Personality Factors had huge impacts on overall emotional well-being of subjective well-being and exercised a similar degree of influence on it.
Fourth, both self-control and Big Five Personality Factors had more than half impacts on positive emotions and exercised the same degree of influence on them.
Fifth, both self-control and Big Five Personality Factors had great effects on negative emotions of emotional well-being and exercised a similar degree of influence on it.
Finally, both self-control and Big Five Personality Factors had huge impacts on satisfaction with life and exercised a similar degree of influence on emotional well-being.
In short, children who have great self-control, a high degree of conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeable of the Big Five Personality Factors, and a low degree of neuroticism tend to show a high level of subjective well-being. Both self-control and Big Five Personality Factors have very big impacts on subjective well-being. It is thus required to help children increase self-control, provide them with ongoing guidance for conscientious life both at home and school, create an atmosphere of promoting agreeable treatment of others, encourage them to have a challenge spirit for something new, and assist them with emotional stability in order to help them improve their subjective well-being.
