자기충실성(integrity)과 전심성(wholeheartedness)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자기충실성(integrity)에 관한 견해 중 주목받는 것 중 하나인 ‘자아통합설’은 후랭크후르트의 이론에 기초해 있다. 본고의 목적은 후랭크후르트의 ‘자아통합설’을 비판하는 것이다. 후랭크후르트에 따르면, 두 가지의 자아통합이 있다. 공시적 자아통합과 통시적 자아통합이 그것이다. 본고에서는 공시적 자아통합(전심성)에 관한 그의 두 가지 주장을 비판적으로 검토한다. 그는 전심성이 바람직하고 중요하며 공시적 자기충실성의 근거가 될 수 있다고 한다. 이를 비판하여 필자는 다음과 같이 주장한다. 후랭크후르트의 기준에 의하여 전심성을 가진 것으로 간주될 수 있는 어떤 상태는 바람직하지 않으며 또한 자기충실성의 근거로서도 적절치 않다. 또한 후랭크후르트는 나치주의와 같이 악한 이상을 전심으로 추구하는 것도 용인될 수 있으며 그 추구에서 나타나는 전심성도 자기충실성의 근거가 될 수 있다고 주장한다. 필자는 이때의 전심성은 바람직하지 않으며 나쁨의 근거가 될 수 있다고 주장한다. 또한 후랭크후르트는 전심성을 가지는 것이 자기를 사랑하는 것이라고 하는데, 악한 이상을 추구하는 것은 진정한 자기 사랑이 될 수 없다고 필자는 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the main views of integrity is the ‘integrated-self’ view that owes a good deal to Harry Frankfurt"s work. My aim in this essay is to criticize Frankfurt"s view of integrity. According to Frankfurt, there are two types of self-integration: synchronic and diachronic. This essay argues against Frankfurt"s claims regarding the synchronic self-integration (wholeheartedness). Frankfurt holds that to be wholehearted is important and desirable, and that it can be the basis for an ascription of integrity. To argue against this claim, I suggest some cases, in which one is wholehearted but this wholeheartedness is neither desirable nor appropriate as the basis for an ascription of integrity. In addition, Frankfurt holds that the wholehearted pursuit of the Nazi ideals can be a suitable caring and the wholeheartedness manifested in this pursuit can be the basis for an ascription of integrity. I argue that this wholeheartedness is not desirable and can be the basis for an ascription of vice. In addition, noting his claim that to be wholehearted is to love oneself, I argue that the wholehearted pursuit of the Nazi ideals cannot be an appropriate form of self-love.
