유로화와 유럽정체성: 통합기제로서의 유로화의 역할과 정체성 형성에의 의미 = Euro and European Identity: The Role of Euro as an Integration Mechanism and Its Significance to Identity Formation

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유럽은 지구상 최초의 초국가 화폐인 유로화를 탄생시켜 유럽의 위상과 유럽시민의 자부심을 고취시켰다. 일국의 화폐가 국가 정체성 형성에 영향을 미치듯이, 유로화 또한 유럽정체성 형성에 영향을 미쳤다고 볼 수 있다. 유로화의 유럽정체성 형성은 화폐의 상징적 장치가 의도하는 유럽정체성의 실체와 유로화를 운영하는 주체로서의 정치엘리트가 인식하는 집단 정체성의 ‘유럽화’ 과정을 통해 설명될 수 있다. 실제로 단일통화동맹은 일종의 ‘사회적 계약’의 성격을 지닌 제도로서 이로 인해 유럽 시민들 사이에서 유럽정체성에 대한 인식이 보다 명확해졌다. 오늘날의 유럽재정위기도 유로화 자체의 위기라기보다는 유로화를 운영하는 제도의 문제로 볼 수 있으며, 이는 제도에 대한 신뢰구축을 통해 극복될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The creation of Euro, the unprecedented stateless money on earth, has enhanced not only the global standing of Europe but also the pride of Europeans. As a national currency enhances national identity, Euro is considered to have created and reinforced European identity. The creation of European identity by Euro can be explained by the symbolic signs of European identity engraved to the Euro and the ‘Europeanisation’ of collective identities perceived by European elites. Economic and Monetary Union can be considered as a ‘social contract’ between the EU and European citizens which enhances European citizens’ perception of European identity. Eurozone financial crisis of today is not a problem of Euro per se, but of its institution. It is thus expected that the current Eurozone crisis would be overcome by establishing ‘trust’ to the system itself.
