근대화와 한국 개신교: 세속화론을 중심으로 = Modernization and Korean Protestantism

This paper attempts to illuminate the relationship between modernization and religion through the concept of secularization, as noted by sociology of religion. Secularization can be seen as a version of modernization of sociology of religion which is discussed in general social theory. In practice, the fact that related debates continue to this day from when the concept of secularization was first developed shows that secularization is thought to be a core theme of sociology of religion. From this perspective, the attempt is made for an understanding within the sociology of religion of the relationship between religion and modernization by carefully examining the concept of secularization and theories regarding it and the newly appeared secularization theory born out of the various debates. Furthermore, through the examples of the growth of the Korean Protestant and Evangelical movements, a simple resolution is sought as to how one can understand the situation of Korean Protestantism in regards to secularization.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서는 종교사회학에서 말하는 '세속화'라는 개념을 통해서 근대화와 종교의 관계를 조명해 보고자 한다. 세속화는 일반 사회이론에서 논의되는 근대화의 종교사회학적 변형으로 볼 수 있다. 그리고 실제로 이와 관련된 논쟁들이 세속화 개념이 발달한 초기부터 최근까지도 이어지고 있을 정도로 세속화는 종교사회학의 핵심 주제라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서 세속화의 개념과 이에 대한 이론 그리고 이를 둘러싼 논쟁 속에 새롭게 등장한 새로운 세속화론에 대하여 살펴봄으로써 근대화와 종교의 관계에 대한 종교사회학적 이해를 시도하고자 한다. 그리고 한국 개신교의 성장과 복음주의 운동의 사례를 통하여 세속화와 관련하여 한국 개신교의 상황을 어떻게 이해할 수 있는지에 대하여 논의한다.
