Dialogue is the primary condition of discourse. But all speech and writing is discourse. Discourse as social practice may be identified by the social institutions to which it relates and by the position from which it comes. In this sense, Discourse can be defined as speech or writing seen from the point of view of the systems of beliefs, values, and classifacations which it embodies. These systems constitute a way of looking at the world, an organization or representation of experience, i. e,, ideology which serves to establish and maintain the status quo of social relation.
By applying the method of discourse analysis of N. Fairclough's Critical Language Study, this thesis attempts to analyse the newspaper discourse, especially it's straight articles. Discourse necessarily involves social conditions of it's production, which can be divided into the social conditions of it's production and the social conditions of it's interpretation. These social conditions are related indirectly to three different levels of social organization: the level of the situation or the immediate social environment in which the discourse occurs (Description stage which is concerned with formal porperties of the text); the level of the social institution which constitutes a wider matrix for the discourse (Interpretation stage which is concerned with the relationship between text and interaction); and the level of the society as a whole (Explanation stage which is concerned with the relationship between interaction and social context).
The dominant newspaper discourse of our nation (un) intentionally serves to establish and maintain the existing orders of discourse as well as more generally the existing relations of power by mobilizing it's modes of operation (for example, legitimations, dissimulation and reification) and it's ideology. But by exposing it's mechanism and it's historical and social dimensions, We can transform the existing orders of discourse and power. This thesis is just a preliminary study for that reorientation.
