A. Purpose of the Study
Elementary school curriculum was revised in February 1973. The revised curriculum
lor physical eduucation places emphasis on physical exercise forms in comparison
with the old curriculum emphasized on play. So the new and the old curriculums for
physical education are different in many respects including the area and the content
of learning.
This study is to identify the problems of physical education and to exolore the
possible ways of improving them by analyzing the area arid the content of learning
of both the new and the old curriculums with special reference to fifth and sixth
grade curriclums in elementary school.
B. Method of Study
In setting up the theoretical framework for physical education, the following are referred
in the main : an explanation of the physical education curriculum in elementary school;
the new curriculum for physical education} a series of teaching physical education in
elementary school.
The questionnares were administered to a sample of 233 master teachers of physical
education from elementary schools in Chung Nam Province. Forty master teachers were
interviewed.
C. Findings of the Study
1. There are many differences between the area and the unit in the content of learning
of the new and the old curriculums.
2. Teachers should have professonal knowledge and skill in teaching, and are feeling
mental obligation because of the differences in the content. So departmental system for
physical education is needed.
3. Regimented teaching, group teaching and individual learning in the teaching methods,
should be respectively applied according to the content of learning.
4. The utilizaton of physical education terminology is increased in the various area
and the amount of physical exercise is emphasized in the content. So professionalism in
teaching physical education is required.
5. The term play used in the old curriculum is changed to physical exercise form in the
new curriculum.
6. The understanding of the strengths and the weaknesses of the new and the old
curriculums will give an opportunity to explore effective teaching methods.
D. Recommendations
1. Departmental system for physical education should be used at least in the fourth-
grades and above to solve the above-mentiontioned problems,
2. More opportunities for inservice education should be given to enhance the level of
professional knowlebge on the part of master teachers of ph ysical education.
3. Explanations of physical education terms should be add ed to the appendix of physical
education text books for the effective utilization of the terms.
