The HCP(hypocycloidal pinch) device for plasma focus was modified for a pumping source of dye laser. An array of multiple stages with narrower electrode gaps and smaller center hole than those of conventional HCP was chosen to make uniform discharge in the device. The spectral distribution and time behavior of its light emission were investigated by using UV spectroscope, CRO and photomultiplier tube detector.
The possible spectral range for the pumping of dye laser is 240 ㎚∼640 ㎚ when the new device is operated at 11KV of applied voltage and 3∼100Torr of Ar fill gas pressure.
Both the rise time and FWHM of light pulse from this new device are about 3㎲ when it is operated at 9 KV of applied voltage and 3 Torr of Ar fill gas pressure.
The peak light emission appears at 3.2 Torr of Ar fill gas pressure without regarding to applied voltage.
At lower fill gas pressure and higher applied voltage within the experimental ranges, the light emission spectrum is increased relatively more in the U.V. range than the visible range.
