Carbon fiber patches were used for their biocompatibility in osteo-chondral defects in rabbits. The resulting repair were compared to control holes in which no implant was inserted. The authors implanted carbon fiber patches (diameter; 3.0 mm, thickness; 3.0 mm) to the osteochondral defect (diameter: 3.0 mm, depth: 4.0 mm) of the 25 rab- bits right femoral condyle and kept left empty as a control. Then synovial changes and resulting repairs w.re observed grossly and by the use of the light microscope. The following results were obtained. 1. There was no apparent biodegradation of carbon fiber and no foreign body reaction of synovium and also the articular cartilage around the carbon fiber appeared to be histologically normal. 2. Carbon fiber promoted the healing of the osteochondral defects with well organised fibrous tissue and cartilage over repaired subchondral bone. 3. The use of carbon fiber is suggested as an implant material for the restoration of osteochondral defects.
