Jean-Jacques Rousseau(1712-1778) insists, in Discourse on the Sciences and Arts, that the advancement of sciences and arts corrupt morals. This perspective brought about an inner inconsistency, for he continued to work in various fields of activity as a writer and artist. He felt especially a considerable inner inconsistency when he wrote a novel or a play. In this article we consider, first of all, Rousseau's perspective on sciences and arts developed in Discourse on the Sciences and Arts. Secondly we consider the nature of the inner inconsistency caused by his own perspective. Finally we inquire into how Rousseau resolved this inconsistency through "Preface to Narcissus, or The Self-Admirer", Letter to d'Alembert on the Theater, and Julie or the New Heloise. Rousseau, realizing this inconsistency, made in fact several attempts to justify his artistic activity.
Even though Rousseau criticized the sciences and the arts, he did not totally deny them. They are necessary to protect human society from more severe corruption. He established the thesis that the sciences and the arts are incompatible with virtue which is of the last importance. His perspective on the sciences and the arts is basically the same thing with few differences, for him virtue is the only thing which matters. Rousseau sends a challenge to a blind belief and a prejudice which regard as natural the opinion that the advancement of sciences and arts are beneficial for human beings. He criticized severely the Enlightenment which has faith in such a progress, and it is on this very spot that we encounter the genuine originality of Rousseau.
