우울이 정치참여에 미치는 영향 = The Effect of Depression on Political Participation

Depression can cause major problems in sense of that it may negatively affect an individual’s political participation, which leads to the unequal distribution of socioeconomic resources. This study tried to investigate whether depression decreases political participation in the Korean sociocultural context. This study selected 6,304 people aged 15 or over in Seoul from the 2010 Seoul Welfare Panel Survey. The independent variable was defined as whether one has mild or moderate depression, measured by Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). The dependent variable was defined as whether one participates in a political group. Logistic regression models were fitted in the total population sample, male sample, and female sample. Results showed that, when political group participation was narrowly defined, the probability of political group participation was significantly lower when one had more than mild depression for all three samples. When political group participation was broadly defined, the probability was significantly lower when one had more than moderate depression for the female sample, However, the probability was significantly higher when one had more than mild depression for the male sample. One possible explanation of this finding for the female sample is the higher level of somatization during the depression for females than males. The contrasting finding for the male sample shows the sociocultural context which is specific in Korea. Seen as one of the highest levels of political involvement, participating in a political group seems to be easily tolerated as a way to express one’s depression for the male population. A limitation of this study is that the results do not suggest a causal relationship, as it used cross-sectional data. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates the population with depression may be neglected in shaping Korea's mental health policy. This study further suggests that promoting their participation in politics is crucial. In future studies, the causal relationship between depression and political participation may be investigated, especially when more data with variables that measure political participation is available.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우울은 사회경제적 자원의 분배를 결정하는 정치참여에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 문제이다. 본 연구는 한국적 맥락에서 우울이 정치참여를 저하시키는지 실증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 ｢서울시복지패널 2010｣의 서울시 15세 이상 6,304명을 연구대상으로 선정하였다. 독립변수로 쭝 우울척도(SDS)를 이용한 우울 경미 이상, 중증도 이상의 우울 여부, 종속변수로 정치단체 참여 여부를 두었으며, 로지스틱 회귀분석을 전체인구 표본, 남성 표본, 여성 표본에 대하여 각각 실시하였다. 그 결과, 정치단체 참여의 기준을 높게 잡았을 때, 전체인구 표본, 남성 표본, 여성 표본 모두에서 경미 이상의 우울인 경우에 정치단체 참여 가능성이 유의하게 더 낮게 나타났다. 정치단체 참여의 기준을 낮게 잡았을 때, 여성 표본에서는 중증도 이상의 우울인 경우에 그 가능성이 유의하게 더 낮고, 남성 표본에서는 경미 이상의 우울인 경우에 그 가능성이 유의하게 더 높게 나타났다. 여성에서 우울한 경우에 정치단체 참여 가능성이 더 낮게 나타난 것은 우울 시에 발생하는 신체화 증상이 여성에게서 더 심하기 때문으로 보인다. 또한, 남성에서 우울한 경우에 정치단체 참여 가능성이 오히려 더 높게 나타난 것은, 한국의 사회문화적 맥락상 비용이 크고 어려운 정치참여인 정치단체 참여로 우울을 표출하는 것이 남성에게 용인되기 더 쉬운 결과로 보인다. 본 연구는 단면연구로서 인과적 연관성이 명확하지 않다는 한계를 갖는다. 그럼에도 본 연구는 우울인구의 정치참여가 작아 한국의 정신보건정책에 우울인구의 목소리가 반영되기 힘들 가능성을 밝히고, 이들의 참여를 증진할 필요를 제시했다는 데에 함의를 갖는다. 향후에는 정치참여 관련 변수가 추가된 자료의 축적을 기반으로 인과적 연관성이 뚜렷한 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 보인다.
