The 『Gukjo-sisan(國朝詩刪)』, compiled by Heo Gyun(許筠), contains critiques. In Noh Su-shin(盧守愼)’s 「Shinssi-gangjeong-hoeje(愼氏江亭懷弟)」, included in Volume 5 of the 『Gukjo-sisan』, three critiques are presented. While they may initially appear to stand independently, they are in fact closely interconnected.
The first couplet’s critique, “byeonsok-jaga(變俗作雅)”, highlights that the spatial setting of the poem―Shinssi-jeong(愼氏亭)―is located at the transportation hub of Pyeonggu(平丘) Station. To the north of Pyeonggu Station lies the royal palace, while to the south is the poet’s hometown. Accordingly, “byeonsok-jaga” emphasizes the poet’s act of looking north and south in the final couplet, where he reflects on his parents and his sovereign. The second couplet’s critique, “hadeung-hyungcha(何等胸次)”, connects the natural scenery of Shinssi-jeong to the poet’s inner psychological state. It indicates that the emotional climax of the final couplet is not abrupt, but rather a natural culmination of the preceding reflections. The third critique, “yucho(幽峭)”, reveals that the poem’s seemingly simple diction is in fact a sensuous and meticulously crafted combination.
