참전미군의 구술 자료로 본 한국전에 대한 기억과 역사의식의 재구성 = Looking through oral literature of American veterans

This Given that memory is shaped and transformed through space-temporal conditions, there arise several questions regarding memory and experience: 1) how is personal memory of historical events shaped and transformed?, 2) does a community, which possesses same experience, share consistent memory?, and 3) what brings differentiated and changing memory? This study aims to explore these questions with oral literature of American veterans regarding the Korean War. I drew on the approach of historical consciousness, which investigates the way people remember and reconstruct the past through individual identity, contemporary interests, and socio-political milieu.
The interview protocol revealed that the veterans reconstructed their oral histories in forms of substantiation of personal memory and responses to social memory. I found how veterans reconstructed the story of the war, in what ways they validated their stories, and what parts of their narratives were most influential in expressing their identity with respect to the war. A closer look at the veterans' oral literature disclosed several compelling interaction between 1) individual values and collective mind-set, 2) the past and the present, 3) personal experiences and intellectual/emotional understanding triggered by artifacts that represents the Korean War, and 4) recollection of veterans' ‘history-as-lived’ and their vision of Korean War veterans' memorial. While they had opportunities to tell more than victory, heroism, what they are supposed to tell in public as veterans, they put their persona of 'veteran' foremost than anything else throughout their protocols.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과거에 대한 기억은 시간과 공간에 의해 형성되고 변모된다. 특히 역사 사건에 대한 개인의 경험과 기억은 사회문화적 요인들과 상호작용하고 시간성 속에서 유의미한 위치를 획득한다. 한국전 참전미군들의 구술 자료를 바탕으로 본 연구는 경험과 기억의 관계에 착목한 역사의식의 문제를 다루었다. 전후 반세기가 지난 시점에서 참전미군이 지닌 한국전에 대한 기억과 이해는 자신들의 직간접 체험을 바탕으로 역사의식을 재구성한 결과였다. 이들의 역사의식은 다음과 같은 특질을 지니고 있었다; 1) 개인적으로 구별되는 기억을 통한 역사 사건의 재구성, 2) 집단적총체적인 이해의 측면, 3) 사회문화적 요인들과의 상호작용, 4) 과거에 대한 이해와 현실적 적용을 넘어서는 미래로의 지향성 등의 면모를 지니고 있었다.
