The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of Goal Setting Training to self-esteem and interpersonal relation in solution focused group counseling program. To achieve the purpose, following hypotheses were raised
First, the level of counseling motivation in goal setting training group is higher than no goal setting training group.
Second, the level of self-esteem in goal setting training group is higher than no goal setting training group.
Third, the level of interpersonal relation in goal setting training group is higher than no goal setting training group.
Fourth, the level of achievement in goal setting training group is higher than no goal setting training group.
To prove those hypotheses, eighteen students were selected from the Juvenile Attendance Center in Seoul and were pre-tested the level of counseling motivation, self-esteem and interpersonal relation. Then, through random distribution, the students were divided into two groups: treatment Group and no-treatment group. Both of two group participated in solution-focused group counseling program which was consisted of six sessions, but only treatment group received goal setting training at the same time. After finishing six-session program, the level of counseling motivation, self-esteem and interpersonal relation were post-tests with same tool as pre-tests. Additionally, to clarify intermediate process, goal achievement level was measured just after each session. The difference of means between pre-test and post-test within each group was verified and the difference of mean between the each group’s post-tests was verified too. Qualifying analysis was performed through observing goal setting group students and no-treatment group then synthesized quantitative and qualitative result was finally presented.
The result of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the level of counseling motivation in the goal setting training group increased significantly than no treatment group.
Second, the level of self-esteem in the goal setting training group increased significantly than no treatment group.
Third, the level of interpersonal relation in the goal setting training group increased significantly than no treatment group.
Fourth, the level of achievement of each session in the goal setting training group increased significantly than no treatment group.
In conclusion, the goal setting training was effective to raise level of self-esteem and interpersonal relation in solution-focused group counseling program for students. Therefore, the hypothesis that the introduction of goal setting training to solution-focused group counseling program will increase the effectiveness is verified.
