      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to illuminate non-teleological ideas in Steinbeck’s Tortilla Flat in which non-teleological characters are mistreated by the civilized world. Steinbeck has the tendency to recognize the reason for all the living things’ being from a non-teleological perspective. His non-teleological thought takes the position that seeing living things as they are without any prejudice serves to strengthen the significance of the existence of human beings. Undoubtedly, Tortilla Flat is one of the best novels of Steinbeck’s where he employs non-teleological thinking. In this novel, he created non-teleological characters such as Danny and his paisano friends who do not live up to the principle of capitalism. Ironically, the lives of most of Steinbeck’s non-teleological characters end in failure because of the teleological people who dictate the social norm in the civilized world. In short, this paper defines what non-teleological thinking is and how it is employed in paisanos, who are ignored by the civilized and standardized society, doomed to end up in failure, in Tortilla Flat.
