제1차 상하이사변 시기 일본인거류민사회 토착파 연구 = The Study on Permanent Settlers in the Japanese Community of Shanghai during the First Battle of Shanghai 1932

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The First Shanghai Incident, examined through the experiences of the Japanese community in Shanghai, was not merely a side event of the Manchurian Incident, but a social and economic event that revealed conflicts between Sino-Japanese people in the 1920s. At the same time, it was also an opportunity for the Japanese permanent settlers to institutionalize the Japanese community within the governance system of the Shanghai International Settlement. On the one hand, to overcome the economic crisis caused by the anti-Japanese boycott, the permanent settlers requested measures such as low-interest loans from the home government. This was not just a temporary relief, but an act of institution-building to establish a fully-fledged financial institution for the Japanese community in Shanghai, using the Manchurian region as a precedent. On the other hand, the permanent settlers also sought to intervene in the administration of Settlement government so that their wishes could be better reflected, such as increasing the Jananese police force. Of course, the essence of the First Battle of Shanghai 1932 lies in the fact that Japanese used force to resolve the Sino-Japanese conflict. the permanent settlers sought to resolve the anti-Japanese movements by “punishing the violent China”. Therefore, it can be said that Japanese immigration to China became a bridgehead for imperialist aggression. Nevertheless, by examining the process before and after the Shanghai Incident in detail based on the experiences of the Japanese nationals, this paper aims to reveal that they existed both within and outside the framework of the imperial government's China policy while building their communities as members of the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai.
