전통문화와 기독교의 갈등문제 : 제사금지와 허용문제를 중심으로 = The Conflict between Christianism and Korean Culture

Korean people even now think that Christianism is in conflict with Korean culture especially in the problem of the ancestral ceremony of Confuciancism that has been the fundamental teaching of Korean culture, philosophy, religion, education, moral, politics, economy, and life. It has been found that the conflict between the two resulted from the accidental event of history in order to make clear historical facts such as harmony, conflict, persecution of Christianism with the Korean traditional teaching in the 18th century in Yi Dynasty.
First of all, we have to define the word "Christianism" containing the whole kind of Christianity, Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodists, Baptist, Pentecostal, and even some heretical sect. The Christianism first entered in Korea was Catholicism accepted by Confucianists who studied the Catholic books written by missionary fathers in China. The first Christian Confucianists did not intend to separate Christianism from Confucianism. They tried to harmonize Confucianism with Christianism for the peaceful reign of people.
But the new Christian community born in 1784 caused some menace or disturbance of the administrative rulers and of the feudal elders by their moral life and thinking based on Christian faith. The rulers and elders of the closed monastic society wanted neither new mode of life nor the foreign thought accused barbarian or immoral In this circumstance the order of the Rome prohibiting the ancestral ceremony was known and some Christians dared to reject this traditional ceremony in Korea.
The teaching and practice of the Catholic church caused the severe persecution estimating the Christianism as perverse religion and that Korean culture can never be harmonized with Christian doctrine.
After one hundred years passed, Yi Dynasty, while opening to the world ceased the persecution and the Rome reexamined and relieved the prohibition of ancestral ceremony When we analyze the Royal message persecuting Christianism and the apologetical writtings of persecuted Christinas, we realize that it is prejudice and accidental fact that Royal message decided Christianism as a perverse religion rejection the king and parents, and it is obvious that Roman Catholic Church prohibiting the ansestral ceremony did not understand Asian culture.
We can now know that the prohibition of the ancestral ceremony was caused not only by the misunderstanding of eastern and western culture, but also by the conflict of the powerful nations, authoritarianism of Roman curia, rivalry of the missions, incomprehension of the missionaries for the other culture, lack of media and correspondence, all of which were unneccessary and accidental causes of the conflict between Christianism and Korean culture.
