한국문화예술위원회 아르코예술정보관의 <예술사 구술채록사업> 운영 현황 = A study on Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts

Oral history, which historians and anthropologists are concerned with in recent days, is one of the new methodologies of qualitative research. Through oral history, people who cannot express their ideas and experiences with written languages can participate in recording history. For a long time, many libraries and archives in the western world have been doing oral history for their collecting archive materials. The purpose of this article is to make an introduction of Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts, initiated and managed by Arko Arts Library and Information Center, which is the largest special library for arts in Korea. First, I introduce some academic theories and historical backgrounds oral history. Second, I illustrate the progress of oral history projects having been launched in the western world. After that, I discuss the background, the development, and the outcomes of the Oral History Project on Korean Modern and Contemporary Arts along with its services provided and use of its outputs. This project is aimed for collecting useful resources for studying on history of Korean modern and contemporary arts. For 5 years (2003-2007), it has performed oral history interviews with 105 famous old artists. And it made so many useful materials-tape recordings, audio-video recordings and transcripts etc about life history of artists. Some of this materials can be used at homepage of Arko. Finally, I propose some ideas for the development of this Project. To sustain performances of this project, I think it will be expanded with not only life history of artists but also testimony about accidents of history of arts. And I suggest needs of systematic training and education about oral history methodology and interview skill for interviewers.
