This study aims to quantitatively retrieve centimeter-scale small-scale sea ice roughness (sSIR) over Arctic sea ice using L-band passive microwave satellite observations and to analyze the seasonal and spatial variability of the retrieved L-band sSIR (L-sSIR), as well as its response to summer melt-season surface transitions. Sea ice roughness is closely linked to various physical and climate-related processes, including sea ice type classification, electromagnetic scattering, and energy exchange among the atmosphere, ocean, and sea ice. Nevertheless, satellite-based studies of sea ice roughness, particularly those using passive microwave observations, remain limited. In this study, we present an algorithm for retrieving L-band-based sSIR using vertically and horizontally polarized L-band brightness temperatures from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite (TBv and TBh) and surface temperature (Ts) from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). The algorithm is based on the polarized reflectivity relationship between rough and specular surfaces and the Hong approximation. The retrieved L-sSIR from April 2015 to December 2023 ranged from 0 to 5.43 cm, with most values concentrated below approximately 2 cm. L-sSIR was stably retrieved across the sea ice cover during summer, whereas retrievals were limited over the high-latitude central ice pack during winter. This limitation was caused by violations of the physical relationship between L-band brightness temperature and CMEMS Ts in some regions. Specifically, CMEMS Ts appears to underestimate the actual sea ice surface temperature under snow-covered winter conditions because it represents the temperature at the top of the snow cover. Consequently, during the freeze-up and winter period from October to April, L-sSIR could be retrieved mainly over regions with sea ice thicknesses of approximately 0.75–1 m or less, which largely correspond to first-year ice. This limitation can be improved in future work by using more accurate Ts data. The time-series analysis based on the 9-year L-sSIR product showed a gradual decreasing trend of approximately –0.0032 cm yr−1 and a distinct seasonal cycle. L-sSIR reached its annual maximum in May, showed a secondary peak in September, and reached its minimum around November–December. This seasonality was closely related to the monthly development cycle of sea ice and was interpreted as reflecting various surface processes, including new ice formation, frost flower development, sea ice melting, and melt pond formation. In addition, the seasonal L-sSIR anomaly and empirical orthogonal function analyses showed that L-sSIR can provide complementary information for diagnosing seasonal and spatial changes in sea ice surface conditions. For the summer melt season, we examined whether L-sSIR can capture surface-state transitions prior to the optical emergence of melt ponds. Over a fixed multiyear ice region in the central Arctic from 2017 to 2023, the positive transition of Fnet, L-sSIR transition, and melt pond fraction (MPF) onset generally occurred sequentially. On average, the L-sSIR transition occurred approximately 14 days after the positive transition of Fnet, and MPF onset occurred approximately 27 days after the L-sSIR transition. Stage-wise analyses of L-sSIR changes and correlations with surface energy variables further showed that L-sSIR reflects different surface processes as the melt season evolves. These results indicate that L-sSIR can serve as a complementary indicator of pre-ponding surface transitions that are not directly resolved by optical MPF retrievals. Finally, to establish a basis for long-term L-sSIR variability analysis, we developed a DMSP TB-to-SMAP TB (D2S) model using a deep learning approach to overcome the limited operational period of L-band passive microwave satellite observations. The model partially adopts a Pix2Pix structure based on a conditional generative adversarial network and incorporates a ResNet-based generator and a modified objective function to generate historical SMAP-like TBv and TBh with high accuracy. During the test period, the D2S model achieved Pearson correlation coefficients greater than 0.99, biases within ±0.3 K, and RMSE values of approximately 6 K for TBv and 9 K for TBh. Qualitative evaluation also confirmed that the D2S model successfully reproduced the overall spatial characteristics of observed SMAP brightness temperatures. Based on this model, historical L-band TBv and TBh were generated back to September 1987, providing a basis for constructing a long-term L-sSIR time series. This study is significant as the first attempt to quantitatively retrieve sea ice roughness using L-band passive microwave satellite observations. By using the retrieved L-sSIR to analyze the spatiotemporal variability of Arctic sea ice and summer melt-season surface transitions, this study demonstrates the physical interpretability of L-sSIR and its potential as a complementary indicator of sea ice surface state. The results provide new insight into Arctic sea ice change and establish a methodological basis for passive microwave-based sea ice roughness research. They are also expected to support future advances in satellite-based sea ice retrieval algorithms, long-term monitoring of Arctic surface conditions, and the evaluation and improvement of sea ice and climate models.
