T distribution center located at Suwon is a multi-product end-of-aisle order picking automated storage and retrieval system. It stores unit load pallets in a rack system based on randomized storage policy and in most cases retrieves less-than-unit load pallets from a rack system based on randomized retrieval policy, by operating the automated S/R machines. It has been faced with the problems of repetitive retrieval trips of S/R machine for a single order and the frequent re-storage trips of S/R machine for less-than-unit load pallets after picking operation at output dock located at the end of aisle, due to variant order size. It believes that these problems affect significantly on the S/R machine travel time or distance, number of order processing, storage space utilization, order processing time, etc. This paper presents a computer simulation study for evaluating three pallet retrieval policies with respect to four system performance measures at T distribution center. The three retrieval policies are randomized pallet retrieval policy, minimum loaded pallet first retrieval policy, and maximum loaded pallet first retrieval policy. Simulation results showed that minimum loaded pallet first retrieval policy was the best among the three policies with respect to the system throughput, number of order processing, number of re-storage trips of S/R machines, and storage space utilization. A simulation model for T distribution center was constructed by using AweSim 2.0 simulation language and Visual Basic 6.0.
