도박중독에 대한 정신의학 및 기독교상담적 고찰 = Reflection on Gambling Addiction from the Perspectives of Psychiatry and Pastoral Counseling

This paper considers clinical features of pathological gambling addiction and the perspective of Christian pastoral counseling on gambling ad-diction by examining various research studies on that specific issue.
Gambling may be seen not only as a catalyst which helps enjoy and excite one’s life, but also as a means to escape reality. This quite positive aspect of gambling, however, does not cover over the fact that it causes serious problems such as financial crisis, theft, family crisis like divorce or domestic violence, suicide, and so on. Despite the seriousness of gam-bling addiction and all the associated consequences, clinical research on gambling addiction in our Korean context has not often been conducted while other addictive disorders (e.g. alcoholism, narcotic addiction and other stimulant addiction, and nicotine addiction) or mental disorders have been studied for years. The author in this paper engages in dialogue with various research studies on gambling addiction in order to explore its clinical features and to discuss gambling prevention and its treatment especially in the context of pastoral counseling. The author, in other words, acknowledges the differences between gambling addiction and general addiction, and scrutinizes the perspectives of psychiatry and Christian pastoral counseling. The author’s analysis on the perspective of Christian pastoral counseling may seem quite odd from a psychiatric per-spective, yet this spiritual realm of counseling or psychology or psychiatry cannot be disregarded. For it integrates spiritual and religious matters and plays an important role in gambling addiction treatment.
The author expects to see more researches on gambling addiction, particularly pathological gambling addiction to come out soon or later. Also, the author encourages Christian researchers to develop a pastoral model for pathological gambling addiction and to continue to verify its effectiveness. Further research on the issue should focus on both theoretical implications and practical applications based on concrete clinical case studies.
