The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between home environment and EQ of children aged full five who live in Gunsan City, Jeonllabuk-do.
Based on the objective of this study, the following research tasks are presented.
A. What is the actual state of home environment of children aged full five in Gunsan region?
B. How is the EQ of children aged full five in Gunsan region influenced by background variables of the children?
1) Is there a difference in children's EQ based on gender?
2) Is there a difference in children's EQ based on the existence of siblings?
3) Is there a difference in children's EQ based on the education background of parents?
4) Is there a difference in children's EQ based on the occupational status of a mother?
5) Is there a difference in children's EQ based on the period of children's education in institution?
C. How is the EQ of children affected by home environment variables?
As for the tool to measure home environment variables, 'HOME for age three and above' is used and a questionnaire to measure socio-demographic variables is also used in this study.
As for the tool to measure EQ of children, 'questionnaire to measure children's EQ aged full five' made by Lee, Byeong-rae(1997) is used.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, among sub-factors of home environment of children aged full five who live in Gunsan, Jeonllabuk-do, physical environment and play materials are sufficiently provided for. Thus, the children aged full five in this region are positively influenced on their EQ thanks to the variables including stable physical environment and play materials.
Second, regarding the difference of EQ based on gender and the existence of siblings of children aged full five in Gunsan, Jeonllabuk-do, the EQ of girls and a group of children who are the only child in the family is higher than that of boys and a group of children who have siblings. As a result of examining the influence of the educational background of parents and occupational status of a mother, the higher the father's educational level is, the higher the recognition expression of children is, which is a sub-factor of children's EQ. The higher the educational level of mother is, the higher the interpersonal skills of children are. There is no significant difference on the EQ based on the period of children's education in institution.
Third, self-control of the EQ based on play materials, which is a sub-factor of home environment variables, is shown with the statistical significance. Consequently, the children who grow up in a home environment where a lot of play materials are available have a high EQ. Moreover, physical environment as a home environment variable has a positive influence on self-control.
