Publishing has long played a significant role within the art world as a dispositif for recording and circulating artistic thought through text and image. Since the emergence of conceptual art in the 1960s, however, publishing has moved beyond its function as a subsidiary or documentary medium to operate as an autonomous artistic form that mediates the entire creative process. Diverse experiments encompassing artists’ books, art books, and bookworks have destabilized the boundaries between artwork and publication, and between authorship and production, expanding publishing itself into a form of action and intervention. This study undertakes a comprehensive examination of the concepts and historical formation of publishing as an artistic practice.
The first part distinguishes publishing art from the narrow definition of the artists’ book, defining it instead as a broader conceptual framework in which the entire publishing process—encompassing planning, editing, production, distribution, and reception—functions as a site of artistic practice. It then traces the genealogy of publishing art through avant-garde publishing experiments, Fluxus and conceptual art, independent magazine cultures, and network-based publishing practices. Through this analysis, the study elucidates how media-specific characteristics such as democratic reproducibility, accessibility, networked circulation, and interventionist potential have continually reconfigured the institutional boundaries of art. Contemporary processes of digital transformation and platform-based publishing further intensify media hybridity and participatory practices, re-situating publishing art within social and technological infrastructures.
Building on this framework, the latter part analyzes art book fairs as sites where the production, distribution, and reception of publishing art intersect. Art book fairs function as public arenas where artists, publishers, audiences, institutions, and communities converge, operating as gateways to emerging artistic ecosystems. This study categorizes art book fairs into three types—nonprofit platform-based, institutionally collaborative, and community-driven—and examines their respective organizational structures, the duality of exhibition and marketplace, and the interplay between locality and internationalism.
This study aims to redefine publishing art as an independent field within contemporary art and to position art book fairs as integral components of contemporary artistic ecosystems and discourse. By examining publishing art practices in East Asia, particularly in Korea, alongside rather than subordinate to Western art-historical narratives, the study seeks to contribute to the decentering of publishing art discourse. In doing so, it demonstrates that publishing art and art book fairs are not marginal activities but significant cultural phenomena that reconfigure the infrastructural conditions and social relations of contemporary art, while establishing both a theoretical and practical foundation for future research.
