Early diagnosis of the injuries of the knee joint is of great importance in order to prevent disability. However, common diagnostic methods often fail during the acute stage of a knee injury. Arthroscopy was performed during the acute phase of injury in 49 knees (49 patients) at National Police Hospital from January 1991 to January 1993. The patients averagte age was 26 years (range 16 to 66) and sports was the prominent cause of injury. Some ee of disruption of the anterior cruciate ligement wasfound in 18 cases (28 k) and injuries of other *int structures such aa lateral meniscus in 15 cases (23 %), me- dial meniacus in 13 cases (20 %), posterior cruciate ligament in 4 cases (6 %), medial collateral ligament in 4 cases (6 %) were detected. In conclusion, a traumatic hemarthrosis indicates a significant knee injury and early arthroscopie examination should be performed as soon as possible.
