It has been pointed out that one of the special aspects of the combination between Korean nominals and the postpositions is the formation of double-case structures. In general, the postpositions are considered to carry out two functions: One is that They are used as syntactic case-makers and the other is that they are used as the helpers for the focalizing function in the discourse-pragmatic context. The focalization function stems from the fact that '-이' and '-을', the case-markers combined with nominals, have their original meaning.
The focalization aspect is not confined to the above-mentioned double-case structure alone; it also appears in the intransitive verb sentence where the accusative case-maker '-을' is realized, and where '-을' makes its appearance between syntactic compound words as well. According to the types of its aspect, the focalization can be divided into the equative structure focalization, the non-equative structure focalization and the additive structure focalization.
In case of the equative structure focalization, the focus is put on NP₂when the syntactic-semantic structure of the double-case sentence has the equative structure of 'NP₁is NP₂'. Basically, NP₂is an attendent component, but it is set off as an important one when the focalization is realized.
Secondly, the focalization of the non-equative structure is realized when the genetive case-maker '-의', the locative case-maker '-에(서)' or the dative case-maker '-에게' is substituted by the nominative case-maker '-이' or the accusative case-maker '-을', resulting in the double-nominative case or the double-accusative case construction. But the syntactic-semantic structure of NP₁and NP₂in the non-equative structure is far from appositive. Contrary to the equative structure, the non-equative construction has its focus put on NP₁and the syntactic-semantic relationship between NP₁and NP₂is not so close as that of the equative construction.
In additive structure focalization, the nominative case-marker '이' or the accusative case-marker '-을' is added between the syntactic compound word with the focus put on the preceding 'root'. The realization of the 'root focalization', however, doesn't make any difference in meaning compared with the no-nominative or accusative case-marker added structure, but the root is raised as a syntactically independent component, and set off as a component with noticeable focal meaning.
The focalization function observed so far is optionally realized by the pragmatic motives. Its function seems to be performed with the nominative case-marker '-이' or the accusative case-marker '-을' and the prominence has to be put on the focalized component without exception.
