This study was performed to investigate the relationship between life style and prevalence of depression in University students (N=224). Zung's self?rating depression scale was used and several life style factors were surveyed. The mean prevalene of depression (≥48 out of 80 points) in University students was 18.8%. The prevalence was higher in females (27%) than in males (11%). Regular exercise affected the rate of depression. Sixty-five percent of students with no depression symptoms exercised more than 3~4 times per week, while only 33.3% of students with depression symptoms exercised more than 3~4 times per week. The smoking habit increased 5.3 times in females and 1.4 times in males with depression symptoms. The drinking frequency was higher in female students with depression symptoms, but it was opposite in case of males. The frequency of coffee intake increased both in male and female students with depression symptoms. Further study is necessary to reveal the relationship between the improvement of depression symptom and changes of life style.
