하나님의 영광에 대한 헤르만 바빙크의 견해 = Herman Bavinck’s View on the Glory of God

The ‘only’ principles that Reformation theology of the 16th and 17th-centuries pursue ultimately converge with the concept of the ‘glory to God alone’(soli Deo gloria). If the principles of the Scripture alone(sola Scriptura), Christ alone(solus Christus), grace alone(sola gratia), and faith alone(sola fide) stand firm, the final result is solely one: the glory to God alone.
If the principle of the ‘glory to God alone’ is greatly important, what is the ultimate ‘content’ of this principle? This study will try to answer this question by comprehensively analyzing the works of Herman Bavinck(1854-1921), a Reformed theologian who lived in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th-centuries. Bavinck was a person who constantly pondered and worked hard on how to reveal the ‘glory of God’ in all areas.
In his writings, Bavinck correctly describes the principle and context of the concept of the glory of God, and the way and attitude toward this principle with a uniquely balanced tone. In particular, it is worth paying attention to Bavink’s ‘theological context,’ which deals with the expression of God’s glory, because if we closely examines the nature of theological context in which Bavinck uses the expression of God’s glory, the nature and attributes of the principle of ‘God’s glory’ and the ‘glory to God alone’ can be clearly revealed. This point is the core thesis of this paper.
The procedure of this paper is as follows. First, the study will review Bavinck’s works as a whole, and identify and analyze the theological context in which Bavinck uses the expression and concept of ‘glory of God.’ Based on this analysis, the paper will grasp the essence and attributes of the concepts of the ‘glory of God’ and the ‘glory to God alone’ and conclude this paper with a final arrangement after examining the practical consideration points of all previous discussions.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

16-17세기 종교개혁 신학이 지향하는 ‘오직’ 원리들은 ‘오직하나님께만 영광’(soli Deo gloria)이란 개념으로 궁극적으로 수렴된다. 만약 오직 성경(sola Scriptura), 오직 그리스도(solus Christus), 오직 은혜(sola gratia), 오직 믿음(sola fide)의 원리들이 건실하게 서 있기만 한다면, 그 최종 결과는 오직 하나님께만영광이 될 수 있다.
오직 하나님께만 영광이라는 원리가 그토록 중요하다면, 과연이 원리가 궁극적으로 말하고 싶은 ‘내용’은 무엇일까? 본고는이 질문에 대한 답을 19-20세기 네덜란드를 살았던 개혁파 교의학자 헤르만 바빙크(Herman Bavinck, 1854-1921)의 작품들을 포괄적으로 분석하며 내려 볼 것이다. 바빙크는 모든 영역 속에서‘하나님의 영광’이 어떻게 하면 오롯이 드러날 수 있는지에 대해부단히 고민하고 애썼던 인물이었다. 바빙크는 자신의 글 가운데서 하나님의 영광이라는 개념의 원리와 맥락, 이 원리를 대하는방식과 자세에 대해 특유의 균형감 어린 논조로 올바르게 말해주고 있다. 특별히 하나님의 영광이라는 표현을 다루는 바빙크의‘신학적 맥락’에 주목할 필요가 있는데, 그 이유는 바빙크가 하나님의 영광이라는 표현을 사용하는 신학적 맥락의 본질을 면밀하게 살피다 보면 ‘오직 하나님께만 영광’이라는 원리의 본질과 속성이 선명하게 드러날 수 있기 때문이다. 바로 이 지점이 본고가지향하는 핵심 논지이다.
본고의 진행 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 바빙크의 작품들을 전반적으로 훑어보며 바빙크가 ‘하나님의 영광’이라는 표현과 개념을 어떤 신학적 맥락에서 사용하는지를 파악하고 분석할 것이다.
이런 분석을 토대로 ‘하나님의 영광’이라는 개념의 본질과 속성을 파악하고, 앞선 모든 논의의 실천적 고찰 지점을 살핀 후 최종정리하며 본고를 마무리 짓도록 하겠다.
