There can be no doubt that hemorrhoids can be best eradicated by excision but this excisional surgery in painful one, requiring anesthesia and hospitalization.
Recently simple and effective nonoperative methods were devised to actually eradicate the under-lying hemorrhoid tissue and elimainate those disadvantages of surgery, and enthusiatic reports of success has been made on these. However this techniques have not been wide acceptance perhaps in part because of the paucity of information the pathology of the band ligation lesion and the cryolesion.
We studied the effect ofband ligation and cryodestruction on the mucosa of stoma of dog colostomy. We found that band ligation showed definite necrosis and separation of mass within a week and healing in 3weeks. Cryodestructed tissue was diasppeared by by liquefaction without actual sloughing of any solid tissue within a week and healed in 3 weeks with few scar formation. One minute cryodestruction was not good enough for destruction, only resulting superficial necrosis.
Band ligation lesion was not much different on morphological changes and ewually effective to band ligation plus cryodestruction.
We concluded that on this experimental study band ligation therapy might superior to cryotherapy and be effective as much as band ligation plus cryodestruction.
