인간 향상의 윤리적 쟁점과 포스트휴먼 시대의 인간학

The purpose of this study is to respond philosophically to the possibility of transforming and enhancing human mind, human body and human nature by utilizing the cutting-edge scientific technologies. Genetic engineering, life-prolonging technology, molecular nanotechnology, super-intelligent robot surpassing human intelligence, and mind-uploading are such technologies. These technologies seem to allow for a new path of human evolution through which the so-called "post-human" will replace the species of Homo sapiens.
This study seek to respond to this possibility in two ways. The first is to examine various ethical or moral aspects of human enhancement. Human enhancement is the improvement of the basic human capacities of cognition and emotion, along with other, bodily capacities, as well as the lengthening of a healthy lifespan, by making use of new scientific-technological means. But many people oppose human enhancement for various reasons. This study tried to examine the validity of these objections. The provisional conclusion is that it is hard to find a principled reason to ban enhancement from any normative consideration. 국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 최근 과학기술의 발전에 따른 인간의 마음, 인간의 신체, 인간의 본성을 변형시키고(transform) ‘향상(enhance)’시키는 가능성에 대응하여, 그와 관련된 문제들을 철학적으로 검토하고자 하는 것이다. 유전자 조작(선택)이나 생명 연장의 기술, 원자 차원에서 물질의 구조를 통제하는 분자 나노기술, 인간의 지능을 훨씬 능가하는 슈퍼 지능과 로봇의 출현, 인간 두뇌의 시냅틱 구조를 스캔하여 동일한 계산적 구조를 전자적 두뇌에 구현하려는 업로딩(up-loading) 기술 등이 그러한 가능성을 노정하는 과학기술들이다. 이러한 과학기술들의 등장은 현재의 인간종인 호모사피엔스를 대체하는 새로운 종(species)인 소위 ‘포스트휴먼’으로의 진화라는 선택을 가능하게 한다.
본 연구는 크게 두 가지 문제를 중심으로 이러한 가능성을 철학적으로 검토하고자 했다. 그 첫 번째는 과학기술을 이용하여 현재의 인간이 가지고 있는 정신적, 육체적 능력 및 도덕감, 정서, 성격 등의 측면에서 그 한계를 훨씬 뛰어 넘어 그 능력을 강화하고자 하는 ‘인간향상(human enhancement)’ 기술의 적용과 관련된 윤리적, 도덕적 쟁점의 검토이다. 도덕적이고 규범적인 층위에서 인간 향상에 반대할 어떤 원리적인 이유를 찾기는 어렵지만, 그럼에도 불구하고, 향상기술은 인간적 삶의 가치와 공동체에 기여가 될 수 있도록 보다 민주적으로 통제될 필요가 있다는 것이 본 연구의 잠정적인 결론이다.
본 연구의 두 번째 문제는 과학기술을 통한 인간 본성의 변화나 삶의 양식의 변화 가능성을 염두에 두었을 때, 인간의 인격성이나 자아의 본성을 존재론적으로 어떻게 이해하고 규정해야 하느냐의 문제이다. 특히 이는 스마트 폰이나 디지털 정보기술의 도움에 힘입어 인간과 기술, 인간과 환경 사이의 구분이 불명료해 짐에 따라 인간을 모종의 확장된 존재로 간주하려는 시도와 연관되어 있다. 확장된 마음이나 체화된 인지와 같은 입장들은 근대의 데카르트주의가 가정하고 있는 자연과 인간, 자연과 인공, 인간과 기계, 기술과 인간, 신체와 정신, 자아와 타자와 같은 이원론적 구분들의 유효성을 문제 삼으며 인간의 본성(humanity) 자체에 대한 새로운 규정을 시도하고 있다. 본 연구는 자아를 네러티브로 구성되는 것으로 이해하면서, 동시에 네리터브의 주체이자 대상으로서 최소한의 체화된 경험의 주체를 인정하는 체화된 네러비트 자아 이론을 통하여 이 문제에 접근하고자 했다.
