Our ancestors lived in this land, keeping faith with nature. And our culture is greatly related to the natural environment of our country. But today, old geographical names which have their own history are disappearing in this land because of urbanization and industrialization.
Accordingly, it is very meaningful to study the ways of living, the geographical features, the use of trees, and the types of natural landscape object revealed in the origins of the old geographical names, and to exploit the result of this study in the field of landscape architecture for the modern life. And the result of this study is as follows :
1. 26 natural landscape objects and 800 old geographical names are discovered at 55 areas or villages of Kyongju area. And 557 old geographical names derived from the natural landscape objects in the areas concerned.
2. Old geographical names are discovered more in the suburbs of Kyongju City than in the heart of this city. Especially, Oedong-eup area in the outskirts of Kyongju City has many old geographical names originating from its natural landscape objects.
3. Old geographical names derived from the location, the geographical features, the trees, the plants, the buildings, the rivers, the valleys, the ponds, the temples and the rocks in the areas concerned, in the order of frequency.
4. Of the 557 old geographical names, 103 ones(18%) derived from the trees, the woods, and the plants in the areas concerned.
5. Some old geographical names derived from plants such as Pinus densiflora S. et Z., Prunus armeniaca var. ansu Max., zizyphus jujuba var. inermis Rehder, Castanea crenata S. et Z, Lespedeza bicolor Turcz, Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z, Diospyros kaki Thunb, Celtis sinensis Pers, Paulownia coreana, Actinidia arguta Planch, Sophra japonica L, Quercus acutissima Carruthers, Rhus verniciflua Stokes Marsh, Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai, Ailanthus altissima Swingle, Cydonia sinensis Thouin, Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold, Prunus armeniaca var ansu Max
