한국 사회 젠더 갈등의 은유적 이해 = A metaphorical understanding of gender conflict in Korean society

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper aims to analyze the metaphorical expressions of hate language in gender conflict in Korean society and discuss its social implication. We attempt to detect and explain the underlying values and mindset behind these expressions. First, we argue that the two genders have been at war, which is confirmed by observing that there is a systematic mapping between the target domain CONFLICT and the source domain WAR in the structural metaphor [CONFLICT is WAR]. Second, we observe that both genders use a wide range of insulting expressions that stem from the source domains of sex organs and physical characteristics of the opposite gender. Third, we note a stream of ontological metaphors, such as [MEN/WOMEN are INSECTS] and [MEN/WOMEN are TRASH], in which the other gender is considered to be a trivial being that can even be killed like insects or just thrown away like garbage. Fourth, we detect a dark shadow of Orientalism in the orientational metaphor, such as [KOREA is DOWN] contrasted with [WEST is UP] (e.g., toyncangnye(soybean paste woman), hannamchwung(Korean male insects)). We conclude that women tend to insult men, mostly driven by resistance against the ever-persistent male chauvinism in Korean society, whereas men curse women as a replaced target of fury with a mixed feeling of betrayal and frustration in the age of steep competition.
