식민지 개척의학과 제국 의료의 “극북(極北)” -이기영의 『처녀지』를 중심으로 = Colonial Medicine in Manchuria and the Extremes of Imperial Medicine－Focusing on Yi Ki-yong`s novel, Virgin Soil

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Yi Ki-yong李箕永(1895-1984)`s Virgin Soil 處女地(1944), the last novel of Yi in the Japanese colonial rule, mainly deals with the love triangle between the protagonist and two women, and with the death of the protagonist, who wants to be a farmer in North Manchuria but has to return to his medical studies because of the love triangle. I examine the novel`s main narrative-advancements in colonial medicine in Manchuria through the influence of Japanese imperialism-to show that some of the motives in the novel are concerned with the medical experiments of the Japanese Imperial Army`s biological warfare laboratory, Unit 731. The protagonist, who lives a labor oriented and abstemious life, in attempting to accomplish his mission of educating Korean farmers in North Manchuria about agricultural improvements and the importance of hygiene, falls victim to development medicine-Japanese colonial medicine in Manchuria, which he believes to be of benefit. By depicting the death of a colonial-era intellectual as being caused by development medicine, which played a significant role in Japanese colonialism, the novel highlights fundamental issues with regard to the concept of “hygienic modernity” in East Asia.
