Time Allocation and the Academic Achievement ofHigh School Graduates in KoreaKim, Jinyeong (Konkuk University)This paper studies the effect of the extra-curricular study on SAT test scores using Korea Education and Employment Panel(KEEP) data, emphasizing the aspect of students' time allocation. We find that the extra-curricular study expands total studying time rather than replace self-studying time. We also find that the positive effects of extra curriculum study on students' achievement come mainly from the increase in the total studying time. By estimating educational production function with studying time as an input factor, we find that one more self-studying hour per week increases percentile SAT score by 0.35~0.45%p, while one more hour on the extra- curricular study in the highschool senior year make no statistically significant effect on Korean and English language scores. But the extra-curricular study does make some positive effects on the mathematics score.
