The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of eletcrosleep therapy. Electro-
sleep apparatus, Som lec Solo, was used in treating 32 insomniac patients at the Department
of Neuropsychiatry, Kyungpook National University Hospital, during one year from Octlober
1980 to October 1981.
The results were as folows;
Out of 32 insomniac patients, 23 patients(72%) showed symptomim provem ent during or after
electrosleep therapy sessions.
Sex and age made little difference in the effects of the treatment.
The effect of the electro-sleep therapy was greater in the neurotic group than the psychotic
group. In fact, there was little effect in the psychotic group.
In improved subjetcs, anxiety and depression scores were significantly decreased followingelectro-
sleep therapy and anxiety score decreased in greater degree than depression scores.
MMPI test showed no significant differences between the improved subjects and the non-improved
subjects in validity and clinical scales, except for the Active Hostility Index, which was
significantly higher in the non-improved group.
Degree of symptom aticim provement was proportionate to the number of treatment sessions
in the improved subjects
Im proved symptoms in order of the improvement
rate were as follow s; release of tension (87. 5% ), sleeping during the treatment session
(71. 9 % ), increase of sleeping time in the night (50. 0 % ), stop or reduction of drug dosage (18.
8 % ), improvement o f epigastric discom fort (16.0% ), increase o f appetite (12.5% ), decrease of
obsessive rumination (12. 5% ), decrease o f anxiety (12. 5%) and finally decrease o f depressive mood
(9. 496) .
