This research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a group program which was developed from 'reality therapy model' to promote self - esteem of neglected children.
Self-esteem of children has direct influence on their behavior, emotion, motivation, and achievement. It is an important factor for healthy personality development and social adaptation. Neglected children demonstrate problems of low self-esteem, inability to cope to different situations.
This research studied two groups (8 children in control group and 9 children in the experimental group) of upper level elementary school children once a week from early Apr. to mid-June, 2000. Provision of the program was limited to the children who participated. The program lasted 70 minutes and was administered to the subject s a total of ten times.
Wilcoxon signed rank Test was used to see the different values between before and after the program. As a result of testing the effectiveness of the program, however, Z value was -2.668, which means the program did make some significant differences(p< .05). As for the degree of the children's satisfaction with the program, 88.9% of the children answered that the program was useful; 89% of them answered that it was interesting; and 77.8% answered that the counselor was satisfactory. In conclusion, the program and satisfaction was evaluated positively.
