The purpose of this study were to find out the effect of sex education on the
sex related knowledge and attitudes of primary school students.
The subjects of this study were sampled among fifth grader students(88 experimental
group, 82 control group) in primary school, K city.
The study was carried out four weeks from 13th June to 13th of July in 1999.
First, pretest of two groups on sex knowledge and attitudes. Sex education was
practiced 40 minutes at a time, at intervals of 2-4 day's six times during 3weeks.
Last of all, posttest of two groups were done ten days later.
The instrument used for this study was a guestionnaire asked for sex related
knowledge and attitudes, The sex education program consisted of structure and
growth of the human body, physical and psychological changes of puberty. the sound
acquaintance of the opposite sex, pregnancy and birth , prevention of sexual violence,
lascivious materials(lewd mass media) and its prevention. OHP film and VTR were
used for the education. The experimental group met six 1-hour session(40min./hr.)
PC-SAS package programs was used to analyze the data along with
x2 -test, t-test, paired t-test and the feedback from students after sex education
were additionalIy analyzed.
The result of this study were as follow;
1. A significant difference between two groups were not shown in general
characteristics.
2. The first hypothesis was accepted. The experimental group showed more
change in the sex related knowledge than that of control group(t= 7.17, p=0.000)
3. The second hypothesis was accepted. The experimental group showed more
change in the sex related attitudes than that of control group(t=2.31 , p=0.002).
4. The third hypothesis was accepted. The posttest point of experimental group
showed more change in the sex related knowledge than that of the pretest (t=9.78,
p=0.004).
5. The forth hypotheses was accepted. The posttest point of experimental group
showed more change in the sex related attitudes than that of the pretest(t=2.95,
p=0.004)
6. The feedback from students after education were analyzed. among many
subjects the education had a big interest in “prevention of sexual violence" and
“physical changes of puberty" In addition they said sex education was essential to
puberty of a growth period and ought to correct mistakes of sex. Also, Thanks to
sex education, they realized importance of opposite sex. Sexual curiosity has fade
away, they had confident manners, they must have willness not to take any
lascivious materials, they preserved hemselves from their physical changes. Sex
education had a positive effect on the sex knowledge and attitudes of childhood.
The study showed that the sex education was effective in increasing sex
knowledge and attitudes. Based on the result of this study we can recommend that
school-based sex education should be done regularly by school-nurses for induced
change of sex knowledge, attitudes and behavior toward sex.
