Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the possibility of applying entrapped mixed microbial cell process as a alternative way to conventional activated sludge process. The results are as follows;
1. It was thought that dead space could be reduced when the reduced HRT has been applied. However, reduced HRT results increasibg dead space in the reactor. In this experiment, when the HRT reduced from 12hr to 4hr, dead space in the reactor was increased from 4% to 32.5% dramatically.
2. In the low loading conditions, there was little difference in reactor performance between entrapped mixed microbial cell process and conventional activated sludge process. Based on the results obtained in this experiment, there was little difference in reactor performance when the organic loading maintained below 0.78 kg COD/m³d
3. when the higher organic loading than 1.54kg COD/m³.d applied, COD removal efficiency of conventional activated sludge process and entrapped mixed microbial cell process was 22% and 37%, respectively. This means that entrapped mixed microbial cell process has some advantage over conventional activated sludge process in handling high loading condition and severe conditions.
