This study aims to analyze the spatial design mechanisms of horror games in Silent Hill f based on Freud’s theory of the uncanny and Vidler’s discussion of the architectural uncanny. While previous studies on horror games have mainly focused on monsters, narrative, genre-based affect, and player responses, this study examines how horror is designed through the combination of spatial structure, restricted visibility, movement control, object placement, puzzles, sound, and bodily imagery. To this end, this study adopts Silent Hill f as a single case and conducts a theory-driven case analysis by dividing the game’s major spaces into “uncanny spatial sequences.” Based on Freud’s and Vidler’s discussions of the uncanny, this study first constructs initial analytical categories and then analyzes the in-game spatial sequences of Silent Hill f to derive data-based result patterns. The analysis shows that the uncanny spatial design of Silent Hill f appears in six patterns: the unhoming of familiar living spaces, the delay of spatial information through fog and sound, the performativity of threshold spaces such as doors, alleys, and corridors, the recontextualization of space through repetition and re-entry, the contamination of beauty through the combination of flowers and bodily contamination imagery, and the regulation of horror rhythm through moments of relative stability. In particular, this study confirms that space in horror games is not merely a background but a core design device that organizes players’ perception, movement, interpretation, hesitation, and survival actions. Based on these findings, this study suggests that the theory of spatial uncanny can serve as an effective theoretical framework for analyzing level design and environmental storytelling in horror games.
