The current study defines the historical period as the beginning of 20st century introducing the new concept of art. That is, it aims to examine the role of similarities and dissimilarities in studying each dance history by comparatively studying modern dance styles of the beginning of the 20st century, the first half of 1900s for the U.S. and from the flowering time to the 1945 liberation for Korea. In case of the West, ballet didn`t pursue coming out of chaotic reality and romantic fantasy, but developed into modern dance, one of more progressive art genres, due to the influence of modernism. On the other hand, in case of Korea, the concept of modern dance began to appear after royal dance was introduced to the public under the influence of practical science during the flowering time, and the first modern dance performance was held in Seoul in 1926. As we saw above, modern dance was born in the U.S. in 1900s and was introduced to Korea around 1926 for the first time. Therefore, importance and purpose of focusing on the U.S. and Korea in the beginning of the 20st century is very clear. In addition, it is necessary to examine dance scenes of each historial situation focusing on historical background of modern dance, and activities and works of Isadora Duncan and Choi Seung-hee. Also it is needed to analyze structural, ideological and artistic aspects of the two modern dance styles focusing on the two dancers when considering from the viewpoint of art history. By examining functions and meanings of dance during a turning point of new dance style focusing on the representative figures as above, we can see the meaning of dance in the present generation as well as the meaning during the time in the two cultures. Moreover, it is also meaningful since the study pave the way to establish dance art theory on the basis of our experience and tradition based those meanings in those days and the modern times.
