2000년대 셰익스피어 영화화 작업 : 역사와 전망 = Shakespeare on Screen since 2000: Fact and Vision

Towards the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, both Shakespeare being a popular and respectable playwright and his plays are increasingly encountered through various sites of popular culture. It is in cinema, however, that cultural activity with Shakespeare is at its most diverse. A variety of Shakespeare films at different levels of social and cultural contexts across the globe have been already completed and are being produced for their scheduled releases during the period covering from 2002 to 2009, in the wake of the last decade (1989~2001) of the twentieth century`s big bang or the bard boom on Shakespeare on screen. To the recent category included are such culturally and cinematically prominent films as Midsummer Night`s Rave, King of Texas, Kanaki, Deliver Us from Eva, Maqbool, William Shakespeare`s The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare Behind Bars, As You Like It, Macbeth, The Banquet, Omkara, King of California, and The Shakespeare Code as an outstanding TV program on Shakespeare. In addition, The Tempest and King Lear are expected to release in 2009. These films have two significant types of cinematic transformation process: original text films and genre adaptations. Original text means films whose screenplays use Shakespeare`s language, in English or in translation; genre adaptations mean works that abandon Shakespeare`s pentameters and settings, then tailor his storylines and characters to the conventions of popular film genres. Some of the cinematic and cultural characteristics of Shakespeare films in this decade are dominance of genre adaptations, international reinvention of Shakespeare`s plays into screen, ultimate remakes of with modernization and contemporary themes including race, violence, family, sexual identity. That Shakespeare is gradually restored to the people as a popular figure through a contemporary medium of cinema, meaning that his texts are both accessible by all levels of society and saturated with modern-day issues, suggests a return to his original position as a definitively collaborative, urban-based author whose plays are available for public consumption.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 2000년대 셰익스피어 영화의 주된 흐름을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 셰익스피어 영화화 작업의 중요한 역사적 단층들을 재점검하며, 세계 영화시장에서 2000년 이후 현재까지 제작되었거나 혹은 가까운 장래에 개봉예정인 셰익스피어 영상물들의 주요한 성과들을 살펴봄으로써 향후 셰익스피어 영화화 작업에 대한 가시적 전망을 가늠해보고자 한다. 1990년대 셰익스피어 영화화 작업을 미국/할리우드가 주도하고, 젊은 대중의 취향을 매우 의식한 자본성이 강한 대중화의 단계로 규정한다면, 2000년대는 셰익스피어 영화의 본산지였던 할리우드를 벗어나 지리적으로 파편적이며 보다 국제적인 제작 분위기가 형성되고 있다는 사실과 함께 이전 시대에 비해 원작과 각색에 대한 경계가 매우 희미해지고 있다는 점을 그 특징으로 들 수가 있다. 금세기 들어 셰익스피어가 영화를 통하여 우리들에게 다시 대중적인 문화인물로서 부상하고 있는 것은 그의 텍스트들이 현재에 보다 대중적이며 보편적인 소통의 도구로 발전하고 있는 영상매체와 테크닉에 의해 다양한 접근이 가능해지고, 아울러 우리 시대의 사회, 문화적 이슈들을 적극적으로 반영하고 있음을 의미한다. 셰익스피어 영화는 해럴드 블룸(Harold Bloom)이 주장한 바처럼, 인간 자신과 상대 자아에 대한 깊은 탐구력을 제공함은 물론 이제는 세계의 관객들이 상호문화적인 역동성을 서로 교류할 수 있는 공동의 함수로 발전하고 있다.
