This study is to identify benefit and cost factors on membership and participation in community organizations. For that purpose, factor analysis, logistic regression and general multiple regression models were applied to 617 questionnaire data collected from 8 neighborhoods in Cheongwon-Gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do. As a result of factor analysis, this study identifies two sub-factors for benefit and cost sides of participation respectively: `personal` and `social-normative` ones for the benefit side, and `personal` and `social-organizational` ones for the cost side. The regression result shows that the social-normative benefit and personal cost factors have statistically significant influence on community organization membership. The participation level, on the other hand, appear to be significantly influenced by social-normative benefit, social-organizational cost, and personal cost factors in order. The social-normative benefit turns out to be the only significantly influential benefit/cost factor for the experience as an official of community organization. The social-normative benefit, social-organizational cost, and personal cost factors in order also appear to significantly influence the participation level as an official of community organization. The conclusion provides some policy implications of research result and future research direction.
