A Study on the Meaning Construction of Metaphorical Compounds Based on Conceptual Blending. The Journal of Linguistic Science 64, 1-24. The purpose of this paper is to manifest how meanings of metaphorical compounds are constructed through the conceptual blending theory. Traditionally, the study of compound words concentrated on their classification based on their forms, structures, and meanings. The constituent components of a compound are usually combined to have its literal meaning. However, there are compounds that do not necessarily succumb to the compositionality principle. To a large degree, these compounds are called figurative compounds, which are divided into metaphorical compounds and metonymic compounds. In this paper, I specifically examine the method of meaning construction Of metaphorical compounds by dividing them into unitary and double metaphorical compounds. Furthermore, I demonstrate the possibility that the meaning of literal compounds such as pet fish can be analyzed through the conceptual blending theory. The advantage of the theory is that it can not only fully explain the meaning configuration method of both metaphorical and literal meanings through the same conceptual blending process, but also display the method with conceptual integration networks.(Naval Academy)
