'나 홀로 여가족' : 개성추구의 즐거움인가, 공동체의 변화인가

In current society, there exists an unconventional and unusual consumer behavior caused by political, economic and sociocultural changes. This study has selected the leisure activity alone which shows our current society changed. In this study, the group showing these leisure behaviors is defined as ‘leisure-alone folk’ and the study is in understanding the leisure experience of that group appears mainly to people in their 20’s, in the context of our society’s sociocultural, and in revealing the implications.
Five women and four men in their 20s who consider themselves ‘leisure-alone folk’ participated in this study. This study has been conducted through personal interviews from October of 2010 to August of 2011. The interviews were conducted for two hours on average through a couple of times. The interview questions were done in unconstructed style in order to express their experiences and introductory questions and rigorous investigative questions proposed by Kvale(1996) were used to derive more detailed and rich answers. In addition, the text was analyzed be combining and revising the 3 steps suggested by Miles and Huberman(1984) and Dey(1993). the results of this study are as follows.
First, the egocentric leisure experience of ‘leisure-alone folk’ is realized as that could satisfy their narcissism desires. ‘Leisure-alone folk’ tries to obtain thoroughly the personal pleasure and satisfaction through the leisure under the privatized leisure culture. The participants could have their own choice and realize themselves as a human being more precious than others in their leisure experience. This is because the leisure is not for the instrumental purpose so as to maintain a good relationship. The participants positively accept that they would become closed from those around them. That is ‘leisure-alone folk’ becomes closed from surroundings and stimulations around them through the egocentric leisure experience that makes them think themselves only by being immersed in themselves.
Second, the leisure to ‘leisure-alone folk’ is an active act to break away from the repressed everyday life and our current society that causes losing the subjectivity and excessive competition. For young people in their 20s living in the era of limitless competition free from the migration of capital and labor, the leisure activity alone in which nobody else could participate makes people select on their own, which let them recover individuality and autonomy. The leisure experience of ‘leisure-alone folk’, in particular, plays a role in being free from themselves socialized in order to live as the part of society so that they temporally can break away from repressed daily life.
Third, the restrictions such as time related to economic benefits as the critical factor and the space escalated for various life-styles are indicated as the reason that the participants have difficulties in a group leisure activity. ‘Leisure-alone folk’ would select a leisure activity alone to intentionally avoid constraints of time and space instead of efforts to actively surmount these restrictions.
Lastly, using personalized equipment by ‘leisure-alone folk’ in their leisure could enable them to enjoy their leisure in isolation and to access other communities. ‘Leisure-alone folk’ is comprised of mainly young people in their 20s who have been growing up in the independent and personalized environment. Using personalized equipment is noticeable in their twenties. The personalized equipment facilitates independent experiences in their personalized time and also they have accepted positively. Using of these personalized equipment is in their leisure. The personalized equipment has cut themselves off from interacting or coming face to face with others so that they can enable the leisure activity privatized. However, it could lead to maintain and existing relationship or form a new relationship as they can have access to other communities.
According to main results of this study, ‘leisure-alone folk’ reflects characteristics of people in their 20s ,living in current society, who are active in expressing themselves and egocentric. For that reason, the they are not that unusual group observed to only a few. In addition, ‘leisure-alone folk’ pursues personal pleasures for being free from a uniform standard and a stereotyped and routine daily life. Thorough this study, the leisure experience of ‘leisure-alone folk’ reflects that young people pursue individuality and autonomy and that, for young people, the signification of the community has been changed at the same time.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현재 우리사회에서는 변화된 정치, 경제, 사회문화적인 변화로 인하여 과거에는 볼 수 없었던 독특한 소비방식이 존재한다. 본 연구는 변화된 우리사회의 모습을 드러내는 소비방식으로 나 홀로 여가행태를 선택하였다. 이러한 여가소비행태를 보이는 집단을 ‘나 홀로 여가족’으로 정의하고 20대의 젊은 세대에게 주로 나타나는 ‘나 홀로 여가족’의 여가경험을 우리사회의 사회문화적 맥락에서 이해하고 어떠한 함의가 있는지 밝혀보고자 하였다.
본 연구의 참가자는 스스로를 ‘나 홀로 여가족’으로 인식하는 20대 9명으로 남성 4명, 여성 5명이 연구에 참여하였다. 2010년 10월부터 2011년 8월까지 평균 2시간 동안 1-2차례 개별인터뷰를 실시하였다. 질적인터뷰는 비구조화된 질문을 통해 보다 자유롭게 경험을 표현할 수 있도록 하였으며, Kvale(1996)이 제안한 도입질문과 엄밀한 조사질문을 활용하여 보다 풍부한 진술을 이끌어 내도록 하였다. 그리고 Miles와 Huberman(1984), Dey(1993)가 제안한 3단계를 절충 및 수정하여 텍스트를 분석하였으며, 다음과 같은 연구결과를 도출하였다.
첫째, ‘나 홀로 여가족’의 자기중심적인 여가경험은 나르시시즘적인 욕구를 충족시켜주는 시간으로 인식된다. ‘나 홀로 여가족’은 사사화된 여가문화 아래서 여가를 통해 철저하게 개인적인 즐거움과 만족을 얻고자 한다. 이들에게 여가는 관계의 지속과 같은 도구적이며 수단적인 목적이 아니기 때문에 자기중심적인 선택이 가능하고 이러한 경험에서 다른 누구보다 자신을 소중한 존재로서 인식하게 된다. 특히 이들은 나 홀로 여가행태에서 경험되는 주변의 관계로부터의 폐쇄성을 긍정적으로 받아들이고 있었다. 즉 ‘나 홀로 여가족’은 자신에게 깊게 몰입하여 자신만을 생각하게 되는 자기중심적인 여가경험을 통해 주변의 자극과 환경에 폐쇄적이 된다.
둘째, ‘나 홀로 여가족’에게 여가는 주체성의 상실을 야기하고 과도한 경쟁을 유발하는 사회와 억압된 일상의 환경에서 벗어나고자 하는 적극적인 행위이다. 자본과 노동의 이동이 자유로워지면서 무한경쟁 사회에 살고 있는 20대의 젊은 세대에게 참여자가 자기 자신밖에 없는 나 홀로 여가행태는 주체적인 선택이 가능하도록 하여 개성과 자율성을 회복시킨다. 특히‘나 홀로 여가족’의 여가경험은 사회의 구성원으로써 살아가기 위해 사회화되었던 자신의 모습에서 벗어나 일상으로부터 일시적으로나마 탈출할 수 있는 여가행태로써 의미를 갖는다.
셋째, 연구 참여자들과의 인터뷰를 통해서 경제적인 이익과 관련된 중요한 요소로서의 시간과 삶의 방식의 다양화로 나타나는 공간적 확대와 같은 제약요인들이 공동체적인 여가활동을 어렵게 하는 원인으로 지적되었다. ‘나 홀로 여가족’은 이러한 시⦁공간적인 제약을 적극적으로 극복하기 위한 노력 대신에 의도적으로 회피해버리는 방식으로써 나 홀로 여가행태를 선택하였다.
넷째, 20대의 ‘나 홀로 여가족’에게 여가에서의 개인화된 기기의 사용은 고립된 여가경험을 가능하게도 하며 다른 공동체로의 접근을 가능하게 한다. ‘나 홀로 여가족’을 구성하고 있는 20대는 독립되고 개인화된 시간을 경험하며 성장하였다. 이들의 성장환경에서 두드러지게 나타나는 것은 개인화된 시간에 독립된 경험을 가능하게 하고 이를 긍정적으로 받아들일 수 있었던 개인화된 기기의 사용이다. 이러한 개인화된 기기의 사용은 여가에서 연장되어 나타난다. 개인화된 기기의 사용은 현실의 여가활동에서 타인과의 대면적인 교류를 단절시킴으로써 사사화된 여가생활을 가능하게 한다. 하지만 적극적인 개인화기기의 활용은 다른 공동체로의 접근이 가능하게 함으로써 기존의 관계를 유지하거나 새로운 관계를 형성하게 한다.
연구결과 ‘나 홀로 여가족’은 젊은 세대의 일부에게 나타나는 독특한 집단이기 보다 자기표현에 적극적이고 개인중심적인 현재의 20대에게 나타나는 특성을 반영한 형태로써 보여 진다. 또한 ‘나 홀로 여가족’은 획일적인 잣대와 기준, 그리고 현대사회의 단조롭고 평균적인 일상으로부터 벗어나 개인의 즐거움을 추구하고 있다. 이처럼 연구를 통해서 ‘나 홀로 여가족’의 여가경험은 젊은 세대의 개성과 자율성 추구를 반영하는 동시에 젊은 세대에게 공동체가 갖는 의미가 변화하였음을 보여준다.
