(Melancholia and Moralism: Essays on AIDS and Queer Politics)』을 인용한다.

This thesis is a study of artistic practice that seeks to realize mourning through painting—works that record and remember the multiple emotions emerging during or after experiences of loss and struggle. I’ve been in activism on urban movements resisting redevelopment and gentrification, and later expanded to the places of various ‘social Others’ —women, homeless, non-citizens, laborers, and victims of social disasters. Based on these field experiences, I have developed two-dimensional works on struggle, loss, and mourning.
In the early chapters, I engage with Sigmund Freud’s essay “Mourning and Melancholia” and Douglas Crimp’s “Melancholia and Militancy”. Through these texts, I examine the social Others in contemporary Korean society and argue for the necessity of alternative forms of mourning that resist the “normative” mourning presented by the state and institutional frameworks. I also describe the mourning and struggles in Korean social movement, as a painter who produces images, which should be recorded, represented, and expanded. This perspective reconsiders the role of cultural and artistic practices in capturing and deepening the multilayered emotions present at sites of struggle.
The middle section of the thesis categorizes the Korean social movements I experienced as an activist—by period and by issue—and elaborates on the scenes and sensations that became subjects of recording and memory. I also trace how these experiences led me to create paintings that represent and expand the emotions of struggle and mourning. By examining urban movements, poverty movements, labor movements, and disaster-related movements, I address the structural violence that runs through them and affirm the need for alternative sensibilities of mourning which can resist such violence.
The final section analyzes my own work by grouping it according to criteria such as drawing/painting, period, and point of view. I examine the emotions and messages communicated by each piece and analyze the origins and semantic structures of the metaphorical iconography that recurs throughout my work. In conclusion, this thesis reflects on whether my paintings on loss and mourning can function as cultural practice, and reconsiders the attitudes of struggle and mourning that my artistic practice must continue to pursue.
